Many have become confused about Pauls writings of the Law as from one point of view he writes in support of the Law and from the other point of view He writes saying that the Law is not the most important issue.
For example, he wrote in support of the Law:
13 for not the hearers of the law are just in the sight of YHWH, but the doers of the law will be justified;
31 Do we then make void the law through faith? Certainly not! On the contrary, we establish the law.
But what about grace?
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of YHWH, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.
Then there are other times when Paul is apparently writing against the Law:
4 Therefore, my brethren, you also have become dead to the law through the body of Yahushuah, that you may be married to another—to Him who was raised from the dead, that we should bear fruit to YHWH.
4 For Yahushuah is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.
4 You have become estranged from Christ, you who attempt to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace.
16 knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Yahushuah HaMashiach, even we have believed in Yahushuah HaMashiach, that we might be justified by faith in HaMashiach and not by the works of the law; for by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified.
There tends to be two separate views on this subject. I would also propose that this is a third at this time, but for the moment we will just look at these two, which shall reveal the third.
Mainstream Christianity says:
* Yahushuah died to give us Grace. We now are not under the Law but under Grace.
* The New Covenant is the New Testament and only authority.
* The Old Testament and Old Covenant and its Laws are obsolete.
* Gentile Christians are not like the Old Testament ‘Jews’ and Laws.
* Yahushuah only gave us two commands: “Love YHWH ” and “Love your Neighbour”.
* Nobody can keep the commandments.
* We are just all sinners.
Hebrew Roots “Messianic Torah Keepers” say:
* Law means Torah which means the first five Books of Moses.
* If Yahshuah kept the First Five Books of Moses, so must we.
* When “Law” is mentioned in a negative way it is referring to the oral Rabbinic Laws (Talmud).
* Yahshuah is the “Goal” of the Torah.
* Yahshuah “fulfilling the Law” means He “filled it up” (The Torah)
* Keep all of the “613 Laws” and there can be good reason as to why one would not apply to us (e.g I’m not a priest).
When looking at these two different viewpoints one needs to remember what Yahushuah said in Luke 11:17
17 But He, knowing their thoughts, said to them:“Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and a house divided against a house falls.”
and in Psalm 11:3
“3 If the foundations are destroyed,
What can the righteous do?”
We know that the kingdom is where YHWH resides. The Law is the foundation.
“for the Law made nothing perfect; on the other hand, there is the bringing in of a better hope though which we draw near to Elohiym.”
39 and by Him everyone who believes is justified from all things from which you could not be justified by the law of Moses.
There have been a total of nine covenants YHWH has made with mankind.
They have been made with:
Abraham – A total of four covenants.
Then the book of THE Covenant was made in Exodus 24:7-8 (A single covenant) with Moses.
“7 Then he took the Book of the Covenant and read in the hearing of the people. And they said, “All that the Lord has said we will do, and be obedient.” 8 And Moses took the blood, sprinkled it on the people, and said, “This is the blood of the covenant which the Lord has made with you according to all these words.”
The Law of Moses was another Covenant which was made over a 40 day period.
In Numbers they were out of covenant for forty years.
In Deuteronomy they reentered a covenant in the “Book of the Law”.
1 John 2:3-6
3 Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. 4 He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of YHWH is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. 6 He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.
His commandments are his covenant instructions. Walking in the same manner He did is keeping His commandments.
What is a covenant?
A useful way to look at a scriptural covenant is to compare it to a modern day contract.
Adam – Genesis 1-2
27 So YHWH created man in His own image; in the image of YHWH He created him; male and female He created them. 28 Then YHWH blessed them, and YWHW said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
a) Adam was made in the image if YHWH. (Image)
b) Adam and Eve were given dominion over the earth. (Dominion)
8 The Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden, and there He put the man whom He had formed.
c) Adam and Eve were placed in the garden with YHWH had created. (Land)
Adam and Eve broke the Covenant. The Penalty for this was:
1) That they were banned from the Fathers land (The Tree of Life). (Land)
23 therefore the Lord God sent him out of the garden of Eden to till the ground from which he was taken. 24 So He drove out the man; and He placed cherubim at the east of the garden of Eden, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of life.
2) That they would return to the dust. (Loses his image)
17 Then to Adam He said, “Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat of it’:
“Cursed is the ground for your sake;
In toil you shall eat of it
All the days of your life.
18 Both thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you,
And you shall eat the herb of the field.
19 In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread
Till you return to the ground,
For out of it you were taken;
For dust you are,
And to dust you shall return.”
His descendants would be in Adam’s image, no longer in YHWH’s image.
“And Adam lived an hundred and thirty years, and begat a son in his own likeness, after his image; and called his name Seth:”
3) Satan gains dominion over Man. (Loses Dominion)
And the YHWH Elohim said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:
Why is all this so complicated? It is due to the misunderstanding of two simple words.
Grace – Strongs #G5463 Charis -> Good Will, Loving Kindness, Favour.
Mercy – Strongs #H2617 Checed -> Goodness, Kindness, Faithfulness.
Grace could be viewed as a delayed judgement which provides time to everyone to keep His covenant?
Law – the instructions of the covenant.
26 For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27 but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries. 28 Anyone who has rejected Moses’ law dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29 Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace?
Noah – Genesis 6-9
Promises spoke to Abraham and his seed were:
* Descendants (Many nations)
1) Abram – Genesis 15:9-21 (Blood) Land
2) Abraham – Genesis 17:1-24 (Blood) Seed
7 And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee.
– A Covenant between YHWH and Yahushuah
– Galatians 3:16-18
16 Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.
17 And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect.
18 For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise.
3) Abrahams Descendants – Exodus 19:5 – 24:8 (Blood) Inheritance
Moses (3 Covenants)
This Covenant was broken by the Golden Calf.
5 Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine:
6 And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.
So what was wrong with this covenant?
7 For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second.
8 For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah:
9 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord.
10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:
The Law of Moses – (Ten Commandments) – Horeb
Book of the Law is Deuteronomy. – (Ten commandments and Other laws) – Moab
These are the words of the covenant which the Lord commanded Moses to make with the children of Israel in the land of Moab, besides the covenant which He made with them in Horeb.
One covenant with David.
